Tender stems bear lush blooms and windswept leaves collect round new progress in artist Shota Suzuki’s delicate steel sculptures. Rendered in painstaking element, the kinds are impressed by flora round his residence and studio in Kyoto, corresponding to Japanese maple timber and dandelions which have gone to seed. “Recently, I have been adding rain and wind to my work,” he tells Colossal, sharing that he’s impressed by the best way nature demonstrates the passing of time. He provides silvery water droplets to ginkgo leaves, ruffles the petals of flowers, or portrays a department of cherry blossoms as if it has blown from a tree.

An early curiosity in jewellery led Suzuki to check metalworking, and the beautiful element of florals and foliage suited his capacity to work on a small scale. A variety of patinas create a life-like look, achieved by combining an array of chemical substances that produce particular hues and textures, together with conventional Japanese copper coloration strategies corresponding to niiro. “I don’t want to create works in which time stands still,” he says. “I want to express a moment in time.”

Suzuki’s work is included in Natural Mastery: Lacquer and Silver Works from Japan at Stuart Lochhead Sculpture in London from December 1 to 9. You can discover extra work on his website and Instagram.
