Photographer Masayuki Oki Focuses a Humorous Lens on Japan’s Feline Residents — Colossal

The archipelago of Japan consists of greater than 6,800 islands, of which round 280 are inhabited, and in a couple of locations, generally known as neko-shima or “cat islands,” felines vastly outnumber the human residents. Fishing villages just like the one on Aoshima, probably the most well-known of round a dozen cat islands, launched the creatures within the early twentieth century to fight rodent infestations. Their prolific progeny, perched on partitions and scampering underfoot, have been a steady supply of fascination for photographer Masayuki Oki.

For the previous eight years, Oki has documented clowders of cats in his dwelling metropolis of Tokyo and on islands across the nation, specializing in the feral animals’ interactions. Viewed by a an anthropomorphic lens, the photographs seize playful pounces and awkward entanglements with humor and a knack for good timing.

You can observe Oki’s feline adventures on his blog and Instagram. He releases annual calendars that includes a number of the 12 months’s greatest pictures, and he additionally updates a YouTube channel with brief movies of furball shenanigans.
